EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured, evidence-based psychotherapy that helps people recover from trauma, PTSD, and distressing life experiences. It works by using bilateral stimulation — typically guided eye movements – while you briefly focus on a traumatic memory, allowing the brain to reprocess that memory so it no longer holds the same emotional charge.
If you’ve ever felt stuck with painful memories or emotions that just won’t fade, you’re not alone. Many people find that even after time has passed, certain experiences still carry a heavy emotional charge – like they’re frozen in the past. That’s where EMDR therapy can help.
EMDR, which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, was developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s. She discovered that traumatic memories are stored in the brain differently than other memories, almost like they get “stuck” without being fully processed. Because of this, reminders of the event, sometimes even small or unexpected ones, can bring back the same distress all over again, even long after the event has ended.
EMDR works by helping your brain “unstick” those memories so they can finally be processed in a healthier way. Using gentle eye movements, sounds, or taps, EMDR activates your brain’s natural healing system. Over time, the emotional intensity of the memory softens, and you may find yourself reacting with more calm, strength, and balance.
The best part? You don’t have to go into every detail of what happened for EMDR to work. Instead, we focus on helping your brain do the healing it already knows how to do – with the right guidance and support.
Painful memories can remain unprocessed, feeling as intense as the original event
Safely revisit memories without becoming overwhelmed or retraumatized
Guided eye movements, tapping, or sounds help activate natural healing processes
The brain begins to process and organize distressing experiences properly
Memories lose their intensity and feel like something that happened in the past
Repeated sessions help lessen the emotional charge and lasting impact
EMDR was originally developed for PTSD and trauma, but research now supports its use for a much broader range of concerns:
If distressing memories or past experiences are affecting your daily life, EMDR may be a good fit.
No. One of the most common concerns people have about trauma therapy is that they’ll have to describe everything in detail and relive the worst moments. EMDR does not require you to narrate or analyze the traumatic event. You hold the memory in mind while your therapist guides the bilateral stimulation — you don’t have to talk through the details unless you want to. Many clients find this a relief, especially if they’ve struggled to talk about what happened in traditional talk therapy.
At Therapy Villa in Etobicoke, your EMDR therapist will spend the first sessions gathering history, building rapport, and teaching you grounding and stabilization skills before any trauma processing begins. When you’re ready, processing sessions follow a structured eight-phase protocol:
Your therapist gathers information about your past experiences, current challenges, and therapy goals. Together, you create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs.
Before processing difficult memories, you’ll learn coping strategies and grounding techniques. This helps you build a “toolkit” to manage emotions during and between sessions.
You and your therapist identify specific memories, negative beliefs, and emotional triggers to work on. This step sets the focus for EMDR processing.
Using bilateral stimulation (such as guided eye movements), you’ll briefly focus on the memory. This helps your brain reprocess distressing experiences in a safe and controlled way.
Once the emotional intensity decreases, your therapist helps you strengthen positive beliefs to replace the negative ones associated with the memory.
You’ll check your body for any remaining tension or discomfort. This ensures that both emotional and physical responses are fully processed.
Each session ends with techniques to help you return to a calm and balanced state, ensuring you feel safe before leaving.
At the start of the next session, your therapist reviews your progress and determines the next steps, ensuring continuous healing and improvement.
Sessions are typically 60 to 90 minutes. Your therapist sets the pace and will never push you further than you’re ready to go.
EMDR therapy follows an eight-phase process that’s designed to support you every step of the way. Each phase builds upon the previous one, leading to deep and lasting healing. Here’s what the process looks like:
We begin by getting to know you; your story, current challenges, and your goals for therapy to create a personalized plan for your healing.
You’ll learn calming and grounding tools and get familiar with the gentle eye movements, sounds, or taps used in EMDR.
Together, we choose a memory to focus on, notice how it affects you - emotions, body sensations, and beliefs tied to it, and identify a positive belief you’d like to hold instead.
This is where the core healing happens. While focusing on the memory, your therapist guides you through eye movements, taps, or tones. The distress gradually eases.
We strengthen the new, positive belief to replace the old, negative one. For example, shifting from “I am powerless” to “I am capable and safe.”
Because trauma is often stored in the body, your therapist will guide you to notice any lingering tension or discomfort until your body feels at ease.
Yes. Therapy Villa offers EMDR therapy online across Ontario via secure video. Research has confirmed that EMDR delivered over telehealth is as effective as in-person sessions for most clients. Whether you’re in Toronto, Mississauga, Ottawa, Hamilton, or anywhere else in the province, you can access EMDR therapy from a registered psychologist without having to travel.
The number of sessions varies depending on the nature and complexity of what you’re working through. Single-incident trauma (a car accident, one specific event) often resolves in 6 to 12 sessions. Complex or developmental trauma typically takes longer. Your therapist at Therapy Villa will discuss realistic timelines with you early on and adjust the treatment plan as you progress. Many clients notice a meaningful shift within the first few processing sessions.
People often come to EMDR feeling stuck—and leave feeling freer. Some of the benefits you may notice:
Feel lighter and less distressed, sometimes within just a few sessions.
Improvements often stay with you long after therapy ends.
Experience fewer symptoms of anxiety, panic, or depression.
Begin to see yourself with more confidence and self-compassion.
Healing past wounds can create closer, healthier connections.
You don’t need to share every detail of your trauma for EMDR to work.
EMDR therapy has been found effective for various psychological conditions, including:
EMDR sessions delivered by a registered psychologist or psychotherapist are typically covered under extended health benefits that include psychology or psychotherapy. OHIP does not cover private psychology services. Check your plan for annual maximums and eligible providers.
CBT focuses on identifying and changing unhelpful thought patterns through structured exercises and homework. EMDR focuses on reprocessing the stored memories and beliefs at the root of those patterns. Both are evidence-based; the right fit depends on your history and how you process things.
It's normal to feel some emotional activation between sessions as your brain continues processing. Your therapist will teach you stabilization techniques specifically for this reason. If distress between sessions feels unmanageable, you contact your therapist and sessions are adjusted accordingly.
No. Many people keep their eyes open and follow the therapist's finger or a light bar. Bilateral stimulation can also be done with audio tones or tapping on the knees -- whatever feels most comfortable for you.
