Dialectical Behaviour Therapy is a structured, skills-based form of therapy originally developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan to treat borderline personality disorder. It has since been adapted for a wide range of concerns including severe depression, anxiety, eating disorders, trauma, and self-harm. DBT combines cognitive-behavioural techniques with mindfulness and acceptance strategies, helping clients build a life worth living even when emotions feel overwhelming.
The core “dialectic” in DBT is the balance between acceptance and change. DBT holds that you are doing the best you can right now, AND you need to change. This is different from therapy approaches that focus only on changing behaviour without validating how hard things already are. Therapists at Therapy Villa help clients hold both sides of this tension throughout the work.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy, or DBT Therapy, is a type of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) that was first created to support people living with borderline personality disorder. Today, it’s used to help with many different mental health challenges, especially when it comes to managing big emotions or difficult relationships.
DBT Therapy blends the practical tools of CBT with mindfulness and acceptance strategies. It teaches you how to handle intense feelings, build healthier coping skills, and strengthen your relationships. At its heart, DBT Therapy is about finding balance, accepting yourself as you are, while also working toward positive change.
DBT Therapy’s dialectical approach seeks to balance two seemingly opposing ideas: acceptance and change. Clients are encouraged to accept themselves and their current situations while simultaneously working towards change and growth. This balance is central to the therapeutic process.
DBT is organized around four core skill sets:
The foundation of all DBT skills; learning to observe your experience without reacting automatically
Getting through a crisis without making things worse
Understanding and managing intense emotions more effectively
How to ask for what you need, say no, and maintain relationships while keeping your self-respect
DBT Therapy is a multifaceted therapy, incorporating four key modules: The Four Modules of DBT Therapy are:
Learn to be present and aware of your thoughts and feelings without judgment. Practice being in the moment and understanding your emotions better.
Develop skills to manage your emotions effectively. Gain tools to handle intense feelings, reduce impulsive reactions, and create emotional stability.
Improve your relationships by learning how to assert yourself, set boundaries, and communicate more effectively with others.
Acquire strategies to handle difficult situations and endure distress without resorting to harmful behaviors. Learn how to manage crises and navigate through tough times with resilience.
DBT is effective for:
If you’re exploring Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), understanding how sessions work can help you feel more confident. At Therapy Villa, DBT sessions are structured, supportive, and focused on building practical skills to manage emotions and improve daily life.
Each DBT session begins by discussing recent situations where DBT skills could have been used or were applied. This helps identify emotional triggers and patterns that contribute to distress.
Your therapist works with you to understand recurring thoughts, behaviors, and emotional responses. This step helps uncover the root causes of difficulties and guides the therapy process.
You’ll learn and practice key DBT skills such as emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness to handle real-life situations more effectively.
DBT sessions are highly collaborative. Your therapist closely tracks your progress, offering feedback and support while adjusting the approach based on your needs.
Over time, sessions evolve to focus on your growth. The therapist continuously refines strategies to ensure you build lasting coping skills and emotional resilience.
DBT Therapy is often delivered in stages, with each stage focusing on a key part of the therapeutic process:
This stage involves assessing the client's needs and establishing a commitment to treatment.
The emphasis is on achieving emotional stability and behaviors that put well-being at risk.
Clients acquire skills in the four DBT modules: mindfulness, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and distress tolerance.
The final stage focuses on applying learned skills to real-life situations and maintaining progress.
DBT can support individuals with challenges such as:
