A psychological assessment is a structured evaluation conducted by a registered psychologist that uses clinical interviews, standardized tests, and behavioural observations to gain a comprehensive understanding of how a person thinks, feels, and functions. Assessments at Therapy Villa can clarify diagnoses, identify cognitive strengths and challenges, and produce actionable recommendations for treatment, accommodations, and support.
Sometimes, you might feel like something just isn’t right – you’re anxious more often than not, your mood feels unpredictable, or you find it hard to make sense of why you react a certain way. A psychological assessment can help bring clarity to what’s happening beneath the surface.
Think of it as a deep, compassionate look into your emotional and mental well-being. During the assessment, a psychologist gathers information about how you think, feel, and behave. This might involve conversations, questionnaires, and sometimes specific standardized tests designed to understand things like personality, attention, memory, or mood patterns.
At its heart, an assessment isn’t about labelling you; it’s about understanding you. The goal is to identify what’s contributing to your struggles and how therapy can best support you. The insights we gain help guide treatment in a direction that truly fits your needs, whether that means managing anxiety, improving relationships, or finding stability after a stressful experience.
Psychological assessments encompass a wide array of standardized procedures designed to measure various aspects of human psychology. These assessments involve the use of psychometric tests, a series of structured tasks, interviews, questions, observations, and other tools.
The collected information aids in identifying strengths, weaknesses, and potential issues that may impact an individual’s emotional and mental well-being.
If you’ve been struggling with your mood, stress, or anxiety - or just can’t seem to figure out why you’re feeling the way you do - a psychodiagnostic assessment can help bring clarity.
This type of assessment helps identify whether you may be experiencing conditions like anxiety, depression, trauma-related symptoms, or other emotional concerns, and guides us in choosing the most effective treatment approach for you.
During this process, your psychologist gathers information through meaningful conversations, questionnaires, and standardized tools. We may also review any relevant records, such as medical or educational reports, to get a fuller picture of what’s going on.
The goal is to understand your emotional, cognitive, and social functioning:
- How stress, anxiety, or mood may be affecting your daily life
- How you process thoughts, emotions, and relationships
- How past experiences, including trauma, might be influencing your well-being
From there, we create a personalized treatment plan designed to support your specific goals and monitor your progress over time. In other words, it helps us not just understand what’s happening, but what can help you move forward.
Workplace injuries and stress can deeply affect your emotional health and ability to function at work or at home. If you’ve experienced a work-related accident or ongoing stress at work, you may qualify for assessment and treatment through the Community Mental Health Program offered by Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB).
We can support you in completing your psychological assessment along with the WSIB forms, and provide psychological treatment and care focused on recovery, resilience, and returning to work when you’re ready.
The immigration or refugee process can be incredibly challenging — emotionally, mentally, and physically. Our immigration and refugee psychological assessments provide detailed evaluations to help individuals navigating these systems share their experiences in a clear, compassionate, and professional way.
These assessments can support applications for immigration, refugee claims, or humanitarian considerations by documenting the psychological effects of trauma, displacement, or hardship. Our approach is always sensitive, culturally informed, and grounded in empathy and respect for your story.
While we provide comprehensive mental health assessments for adults, our services do not currently include assessments for ADHD, learning disorders, psycho-educational evaluations, forensic cases, or child custody and access reports. If you’re looking for these services, we’re happy to guide you toward trusted professionals who specialize in these areas.
If you’ve never had a psychological assessment before, you might wonder what actually happens during the process. At Therapy Villa, we believe in keeping things transparent and supportive, so you know what to expect every step of the way. Our goal is for you to leave the assessment feeling understood, informed, and empowered – not just with a report, but with a clearer sense of yourself and the path ahead.
In Ontario, a mental health or psychological assessment is typically conducted by a registered psychologist or by a mental health professional working under supervision as they work toward registration with the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario (CPBAO). The process usually takes three to six sessions, depending on your needs and the complexity of your concerns. Here’s how it usually unfolds:
Adults seek psychological assessment at Therapy Villa for a variety of reasons, including:
You don’t need a referral to book an assessment at Therapy Villa. You can contact us directly to discuss whether an assessment is the right next step.
Therapy Villa offers adult psychological assessments in several areas:
Evaluates attention, executive functioning, impulsivity, and other cognitive processes to determine whether ADHD is present and, if so, its profile and severity
Identifies specific learning differences in reading, writing, math, or processing that may be affecting academic or workplace performance
Evaluates overall intellectual functioning, memory, processing speed, and executive functioning
Helps clarify complex presentations where multiple diagnoses may overlap, such as ADHD and anxiety, or depression and PTSD
The process begins with a detailed intake session where your psychologist gathers information about your history, current concerns, and personal goals.
You’ll complete a series of evidence-based tests tailored to assess relevant cognitive, emotional, and psychological areas such as memory, attention, or mood.
Your psychologist carefully scores and analyzes all test results to ensure accurate understanding and meaningful clinical insights.
You receive a detailed report outlining key findings, possible diagnoses (if applicable), and personalized recommendations for treatment, support, or next steps.
In a follow-up session, your psychologist explains the results clearly, answers your questions, and helps you understand how to move forward with confidence.
The process takes several hours of testing, spread across one or more appointments. The written report is typically ready within a few weeks.
The testing portion of an assessment typically takes 4 to 8 hours depending on the referral question and the complexity of the presentation. This is usually split across two appointments. The full process — from intake to receiving your written report — generally takes 4 to 6 weeks.
Yes. Psychological assessment reports from a registered psychologist are the standard documentation required for formal accommodations at universities, colleges, and many workplaces in Ontario. If you need accommodations for an academic institution or employer, we’ll work with you to ensure the report addresses what’s required.
Many extended health benefit plans cover psychological assessment services provided by a registered psychologist, though coverage amounts vary. Check your plan for your annual psychology benefit and whether assessment is specifically included. OHIP does not cover private psychological assessment.
Contact us through our website or by phone to inquire about assessment availability. We’ll ask a few brief questions to confirm that an assessment aligns with what you’re looking for, provide information about the process and fees, and get you booked in with one of our registered psychologists in Etobicoke or via our Ontario telehealth platform where applicable.
Some components of assessment can be completed remotely; however, standardized testing typically requires in-person administration. We'll clarify what's possible when you contact us.
A psychoeducational assessment focuses specifically on learning and academic functioning. A broader psychological assessment can include cognitive, emotional, and diagnostic components beyond academic performance. We'll help you determine which type best fits your needs.
Hospital and school-based assessments are often limited in scope and have long waitlists. Therapy Villa's private assessments are comprehensive, conducted by a registered psychologist, and completed on a timeline that works for you.

You can reach out to Therapy Villa directly to book an assessment, no doctor’s note or referral is required. Sometimes, your physician, psychiatrist, or another mental health professional might also refer you to us for help in understanding a diagnosis or clarifying symptoms.
Your psychologist begins by getting to know you. We talk about what brought you in, your personal background, medical or mental health history, and what you’d like to understand or change. This is your chance to share what’s been happening in your life, there’s no right or wrong answer, just your story.
Every person is different, so the assessment tools we use are chosen just for you. These might include questionnaires, structured interviews, or standardized tests that help us understand things like attention, mood, stress, or personality patterns.
Over a few sessions, you’ll complete the chosen assessments, sometimes through conversation, other times through written forms or computer-based measures. We might explore how you respond to stress, how you see yourself, or how your thoughts and emotions interact. The goal is to build a clear picture of your mental and emotional functioning.
Once all the information is collected, your psychologist carefully reviews and interprets the results. We look for themes and patterns that can explain what’s been difficult for you and highlight your strengths - because those are equally important in the healing process.
You’ll receive a comprehensive or brief written report, depending on the type of assessment. This includes an overview of findings, key insights, and practical recommendations that can guide your treatment or next steps.
Finally, we sit down together to go over your results in plain language. We’ll discuss what the findings mean for you, answer any questions, and explore treatment options or resources that can help you move forward with clarity and confidence.
Yes. You’ll receive a summary or full report outlining your results and recommendations, depending on the type of assessment.
Absolutely, with your permission. Sharing your report can help your healthcare providers coordinate care more effectively.
Typically, your psychologist will review findings with you within one to two weeks after your final session.
Most extended health plans cover psychological assessments by a registered psychologist. We can help you check your coverage.
The cost depends on the type and length of the assessment. At Therapy Villa, most psychological assessments range from $1500 to $2200. The total cost varies based on the number of sessions (usually three to six). We’ll review the estimated cost with you before starting so there are no surprises.
That’s fine. Assessments can complement your therapy by giving you and your therapist a clearer understanding of what’s going on.
