Mindfulness-based therapy integrates mindfulness practices, such as focused breathing, body awareness, and present-moment attention, into psychotherapy. At Therapy Villa in Etobicoke, our therapists use approaches like Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) to help clients manage anxiety, depression, stress, and chronic pain.
Present moment awareness, or mindfulness, is the practice of paying attention to the “here and now” – openly, gently, and without judgment – for example, paying attention to your thoughts and feelings as if they were gentle waves in the ocean, not getting swept away by them. It’s not about clearing your mind, it’s about being kind and curious about it.
Mindfulness-based therapy is a way of healing that draws from the practice of mindfulness. It helps you pay attention to your thoughts, feelings, and body in the present moment with more awareness and acceptance.
Instead of getting caught up in worries about the past or future, mindfulness guides you to focus on the “here and now.” This approach can ease emotional distress, clear mental clutter, and support a calmer, more fulfilling quality of life.
Notice your thoughts and feelings without reacting or labeling them as good or bad
Use techniques like breathing or body awareness to focus on the present moment
Learn to see thoughts as mental events, not facts you must believe
Break cycles of worry, catastrophizing, and repetitive thinking
Respond to emotions calmly instead of reacting impulsively
Activate your body’s relaxation response to reduce stress and tension
Mindfulness is a broader quality of awareness that can be practised during any activity, like eating, walking, or even washing dishes. Meditation is one formal way to practise mindfulness. In therapy, you don’t need to sit in silence for hours. Your therapist will teach you practical, accessible ways to bring mindfulness into everyday life.
Mindfulness-based therapies gives you space to pause, look within, and understand what’s really going on for you. In your sessions, your therapist will guide you to:
Notice your thoughts and feelings without judgment. Instead of getting swept away by them, you’ll learn to simply observe what shows up.
Simple practices like deep breathing or body scans help you return to “here and now.”
Rather than reacting automatically, you’ll explore thoughtful responses that match your values.
Over time, you’ll develop tools to ease stress, work through difficult emotions, and live more authentically.
This process allows you to learn tools that would help in understanding yourself with compassion. Over time, it becomes easier to navigate challenging emotions, reduce stress, and live in a way that feels more authentic and true to who you are.

ACT combines mindfulness strategies with the goal of building psychological flexibility. It helps you relate to your thoughts and feelings in a healthier way, while staying committed to actions that reflect your values and long-term goals. Learn more
MBCT combines cognitive therapy with mindfulness practices. It was at first intended for preventing the recurrence of depressive episodes, however it also helps with other mental health issues, such as anxiety, stress, and emotional dysregulation by helping you to recognize and change unhelpful thought patterns.
MBSR was developed by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn and involves mindfulness meditation and gentle yoga. This evidence-based program was designed to reduce stress and enhance overall physical and emotional well-being.
Sessions at Therapy Villa blend skill-building and reflection. Your therapist will introduce mindfulness practices, guide you through short experiential exercises, and help you connect what you’re learning to the specific challenges you’re facing. There’s no pressure to meditate perfectly. The goal is to build awareness and flexibility, not to empty your mind.

There's substantial research supporting mindfulness for depression, anxiety, stress, and pain. MBCT specifically has strong evidence for preventing depressive relapse and is recommended by clinical guidelines in Canada and the UK.
For some people early on, tuning into thoughts and sensations can feel uncomfortable. Your therapist guides this process carefully and won't push you into practices that increase distress. The pace is always adjusted to what feels manageable.
Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy combines mindfulness with cognitive therapy techniques. It was designed specifically to prevent relapse in people who have experienced repeated depressive episodes.
Relaxation focuses on reducing arousal. Mindfulness focuses on changing your relationship with your thoughts and feelings, not necessarily making them disappear. You can be mindful and still feel stressed, but the stress doesn't have to control you.
